Impress your date with one of these award-winning wines

Next time you’re looking for a wine to impress your date, try one of these reasonably priced award-winning wines that range from £5 to £20.

We’ve all been there; blindly staring at the rows of bottles on the supermarket shelf, hoping that a good one will jump out at us!  Next time you’re looking for some wine inspiration, here are the winners of this year’s International Wine Challenge’s Great Value Wine Awards, all of which are available from your local supermarket or wine merchant.

Winning Wines

Morrisons has two winning ‘Great Value Wines Under £5′ – their Red Argentinian Misterio Malbec 2008 (RRP £4.99) and their Sparkling Wine, Canti Asti Fratelli Martini Secondo Luigi Spa (RRP £4.99).

Marks & Spencer takes home three awards for its Manzanilla Sherry NV (Great Value Fortified Wine between £5 and £10), the Scheurebe 2005 (Great Value Sweet Wine between £10 and £15), and their Bluff Hill Brut NV (Great Value Sparkling Wine between £5 and £10).

Sainsbury’s takes the prize for the ‘Great Value Sparkling Wine’ between £15 and £20 for their Blanc de Noirs Champagne NV (RRP £15.99)

Tesco has the best value white wine between £5 and £10 for their Tim Adams Riesling 2008 (RRP £8.99).  They also won the award for the Great Value Red between £10 and £15 for their Caves Saint Pierre – Préférence Gigondas 2007, (RRP £13.99).

The other winners come from specialist wine merchants, but are also available online.

The ‘Great Value White Wine’ between £10 and £15 is Majestic’s Louis Latour Pouilly-Vinzelles en Paradis 2006, (RRP £10.00).

The ‘Great Value Rosé’ between £5 and £10 is Côtes du Rhône Parallèle 45 Rosé 2008, (RRP £8.99), available from Liberty Wines, Valvona & Crolla and Whighams Wine Cellars

The ‘Great Value Red Wine’ between £5 and £10 is Pascual Toso Malbec 2008 (RRP £7.99), available from Soho Wine Supply Ltd, Wine in Cornwall Ltd, Field & Fawcett, Reserve Wines and www.WineDirect.co.uk.

The winning ‘Great Value Fortified Wine’ between £10 and £15 was Krohn Late Bottled Vintage 1994 (RRP £12.62), available from Great Grog, Woodwinters Wines & Whiskies and Handfords.

And the ‘Great Value Sparkling Wine’ between £10 and £15 is Prosecco Valdobbiadene Brut Villa Sandi NV (RRP £12.59) and is stocked by wine merchant Playford Ros.

If you’re looking for a home-grown special, England’s hero for 2009 was the Camel Valley Bacchus 2007 (www.camelvalley.com, £12.95) which went home with the English Trophy.
